Are you the type of people who hate to unpack after moving to a new house? Will the thought of unpacking without the help of friends and family likely to drive you crazy?
It is quite possible that you hate unpacking because you know so little about it. Here are a few steps to help you unpack in the shortest time, and remain sane throughout the process:
1. Work with the inventory list
Our article about packing efficiently should have helped you to label your boxes accordingly before moving. Ensure that you have also prepared an inventory list for all your boxes, as this piece of paper will help you be organized when unpacking. After the move, use the list confirm that everything has reached the destination completely and in one piece.

We showed you how to pack a “moving kit” in our previous article about managing stress when moving houses. Unpack your “moving kit” first, for the items you’ve packed on this box will help you to survive for a few days throughout the unpacking. An moving kit is also the one that you packed last, and it contains the items that you use on a daily basis.
3. Unpack each room at a time

The living room - This will probably be the easiest room to unpack, since the movers will probably bring things in according to how you instruct them. Make sure that they lay the carpet first, set the furniture how you want, and leave all your electronics plugged in.
The bedrooms - Where everyone has his or her bedroom, let everyone deal with their unpacking. However, make sure to prepare the bed because you have to sleep there the first night, then you can unpack other items at your pace.
The kitchen - Place the cupboard and the electronics where you want them to stand. Make sure to hook up the fridge so that the food you have does not go bad, and unpack the cooker and a few pots so that you can make a few meals.
The bathroom - Toiletries and medication should be the first ones in the bathroom, and most of these will probably be in your essentials box because you need to use that room every day. Every member of the family will probably need to use this room the day you move into your new home.
The garage - This room does not require your immediate attention, and you can store the boxes in the garage on one corner, until you are through with the above rooms. You will however need to leave enough space to park the car, and can get to adding the shelves, and other storage spaces a few days later.
4. Set aside a few hours every week

After you unpack the most important items, set aside a few hours on weekends or even after work to unpack the little things, and take the time to move things to exactly where you want them to be. You will eventually finish all the unpacking in a few days or a couple of weeks and you will not stress yourself or have to hire people to help you unpack.
