Moving house is something that everyone will likely experience at some point, whether it be moving from your parents house to your own HDB, upgrading to a bigger flat, or moving from one rental flat to another. It may sound fun and exciting, especially if you are looking forward to your brand new home and neighborhood. In reality though, the actual moving day can be quite a hassle.
Proper packing and moving preparation will save you time, money and unnecessary stress. Here are the steps that you should follow to ensure you get it right:
1. Get moving boxes as soon as you can
To begin the packing process, purchase moving boxes of different sizes from your local store.
Make sure that the boxes are strong enough to handle the things you will expect them to hold, and remember to label each box systematically.
Color code your labels or indicate where the movers are suppose to leave the boxes, be it in the living room, kitchen, or bedrooms.
To save some money, recycle the old boxes you already have at home, the ones that came with all the electronics and other purchases. These recycled boxes are great because they are made to fit specific equipment perfectly. Another great option to save some money is to inquire from your movers whether they provide boxes for free.
2. Get the packing supplies A.S.A.P.
Apart from getting packing boxes in good time, make sure to get enough packing tape, bubble wraps, fragile labels, markers, and tape cutters.

The above supplies will help with every item you will be packing, and this will improve to make the packing more secure and less stressful. You will, however, need to get good quality supplies, and this means that you need to do your homework on the best brands and the best store to make your purchase.
3. Start packing a few weeks in advance
Waiting until the last day to start packing is a bad idea. You have items in the house that you use a few times in a month, whereas others you never get to use until a particular season is starting.

Start by packing the things you do not use frequently, a little at a time. These may include winter clothes, bags, shoes, musical instruments, books and magazines. By doing this you will only need to take care of a few items on the moving day.
You won’t waste any time or require paid services to help you pack.
4. Packing breakables
Of the fragile items, mirrors, pictures, glass cups and plates are some of the items that require the most TLC. Some people bind the above items together using packing tape, and though they eventually get them to their new homes without breaking them, tape residue may be difficult to remove on your valuable breakables.

Wrapping such materials with bubble rolls or newsprint sheets before taping them together will save them from scratches and tape residues.
5. Seek the help for professional movers
Looking for a professional moving company is one of the most important steps to take, since they know how to handle all household goods, regardless of size, weight, or how fragile they are.
They also have the best skills to move special items such as pianos, aquariums, and expensive antique furniture pieces. Contact the movers as early as possible in order to secure your moving schedule as early as possible.
