Women require special health care throughout their lives due to the many stages that they go through. It is important for every woman to have a good obstetrician as well as a good gynaecologist.
Most women wait until they develop problems, then they go to the first one they find. Here are some tips to help you get a good gynaecologist so that you stay in touch with your care provider at all times.
Ask for recommendations before you start the search
You do not have to search from zero knowledge when you have friends, family and colleagues. You can ask for recommendations and check for their reviews online.
You can even consult with your primary caregiver or physician to give you a recommendation. Once you get a few options, narrow them down by considering the proximity to your home, the facility where they operate from, the costs and any other details that are important to you.
Get a gynaecologist who is also a practicing obstetrician
It is good to think of a long-term arrangement when looking for a health care professional. This is particularly important when you are of childbearing age.
This way, your gynaecologist/ obstetrician i.e. ob-gyn maintains a long-term relationship with you by overseeing your pregnancy health, delivery and baby care.
Decide if you are comfortable with a male or a female ob-gyn
Some women do not have any preferences while others prefer to be examined by women. This could be affected by religious beliefs, culture, bad experiences and preferences.
Male ob-gyn may make you feel uneasy at first, but statistics show that there are a lot of top male ob-gyns, especially in the U.S and Europe. Whatever your preference, just go with the choice that makes you more comfortable so that you can be able to ask any questions concerning your health.
Check your health insurance coverage
If you plan to have children, it is inevitable that you will have many visits to your ob-gyn. Check insurance coverage to see what kind of payment policies you have.
Most insurance coverage has restrictions on the number of times that you can visit your ob-gyn. Find out if you are required to fill any documents prior to the visit to the doctor.
Some companies require you to fill a referral form from your primary caregiver to see your ob-gyn. You can also get a list of recommended ob-gyns from your insurance cover-giver.
Get someone who is readily available
Sometimes people get an ob-gyn who is too busy, and you keep on getting their sub. If he or she seems too busy, get someone who you can have a personal relationship with.
Sometimes you can get carried away by the celebrity status of your physician and you end up losing on the personal touch. Your ob-gyn does not have to be the most famous one in your region. As long as you can get the correct care that you require, then you have everything you need.
Make sure that you have his or her contacts so that you can reach them whenever you are in need. This way, you are assured of long term health care for you and your children.
