I started my medical journey in the surgical discipline. I was happy draining quinsy, removing tonsils, frying the inferior turbinates with electricity, perforating the maxillary sinus for antral washout, debrigment of diabetic foot ulcers, amputation of gangrenous toes and leg, fixing fractures with metal plates and evacuating blood clots from the cranium.
 
I was surprised that in private practise, the expectations of patients are not the same. Patients expect doctors to heal recalcitrant ulcers and to save toes and legs. Such expectations led me to study wound healing and the science of ulcer dressings. As such I was led to dermatology. I spent one year in Cardiff, Wales, under the tutelage of Professor Ronald Marks. I was exposed to clinical dermatology and to research in basic dermatological sciences. Cardiff is well known in its quest of Vitamin A research and skin aging. 
 
Back to Singapore in 1988, I was among the first to acquire a carbon dioxide laser. The carbon dioxide laser was then given a derogative term as a glorified knife. Today, the carbon dioxide laser is transformed by advanced technology into its many exciting modes, useful to treat scars, rejuvenate the skin and buzzed off lumps and bumps.
 
In the early days, I also tried to use fillers to transform eye bags without downtime or surgery. Today this same technique is given a nice name of liquid face lift with the introduction of more elegant fillers. The field of medical aesthetic is advancing well. I am glad that I can be part of this revolution to restore health of the skin, the beauty and proportion of the face and to recontour the body to its correct width.
